CSI Teams Investigate Murders Most Foul on the NAU campus!
Our scientific community has long experienced a dearth of women entering the field at the college or university level, not for lack of capability or interest, but seemingly more for the lack of science opportunities presented to them in their formative high school years. The purpose of Girls in Science Summer Day Camp (GSSDC) is to provide high school girls (ages 13-18) who have a curiosity or interest in science with an opportunity to learn basic science research techniques, develop hypotheses, analyze data and present results.
The GSSDC provides a safe, scientifically creative and fun research experience to participants. It is our sincere hope that by providing these high school age girls with an opportunity to experience the world of scientific research, we will increase the number of them entering colleges or universities with a major in the sciences.
The Girls in Science Summer Day Camp is a week long science enriched program designed to engage high school aged girls in laboratory research. The program is set up as a crime scene investigation, in which participants will have to answer the ‘who’, ‘what’, and ‘where’ of the crime. The crime scene (a murder mystery) will be set up in and around the grounds of the Wettaw building on the NAU campus. In order to properly solve the “crime”, the participants will need to collect data, form and test hypotheses, perform a series of intriguing experiments, collect and analyze data and finally present their findings to their parents/guardians at a dinner presentation on the last day of camp. There are two levels of the camp, a beginning level for twenty girls age thirteen to fifteen and an advanced camp for twenty girls age fifteen to eighteen years old or returning participants.
